Toronto Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy

The City of Toronto runs a Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program offering up to $6,650 per property toward flood protection work. Very few restoration companies mention it, and it is the most useful thing you can do after a flood.

Figures and eligibility change. Confirm the current terms on toronto.ca before you commit to anything, and treat this page as a starting point rather than the final word.

What it covers

The program is aimed at devices that stop water entering the house: backwater valves, sump pumps and the capping or severing of redundant drain connections.

A backwater valve is the main one. It is a one-way valve on your sanitary line that closes when the municipal sewer surcharges, stopping sewage coming back up through your floor drains and toilets.

Who is eligible

The City states the program applies to owners of single-family, duplex, triplex and fourplex residential homes. Confirm your property type and the current requirements with the City directly before booking work.

How the money works

It is a subsidy against eligible costs up to the stated maximum, not a blank cheque. There are requirements about permits, licensed installation and inspection, so the order you do things in matters.

Check the process on toronto.ca first. Work done before the paperwork is in order can fall outside the program.

Why it is worth doing after a flood

If your basement backed up once, the conditions that caused it have not changed. The same storm will do the same thing next year.

A flooded basement cleanup runs several thousand dollars and your deductible each time. A backwater valve is a one-off with the City covering a share of it.

Where we fit

We install backwater valves, sump pumps and battery backup systems, and we handle waterproofing work. We can carry it out once the restoration is finished, while the basement is already open.

We are not the City and we do not administer the program. Apply through the City directly and confirm the current amount yourself.

A one-way valve on your sanitary line that shuts when the city sewer surcharges. If your basement has ever backed up through a floor drain, it is the standard protection.

Can I apply after the work is done?

There are requirements about permits and inspection, so check the process before booking anything. Work carried out in the wrong order can fall outside the program.

Do other GTA municipalities have similar programs?
