The Co-operators and water damage: what’s covered and how the claim works

This page explains how The Co-operators handles water damage on a home policy, in plain language, with the facts taken from The Co-operators’s own website. It is general information, not advice on your policy. Your policy documents and your claims representative are the final word on what you hold.

Which The Co-operators coverage applies to what you’re seeing

Start with where the water came from. That decides which part of the policy it falls under.

Burst pipe or appliance leak
Standard sudden and accidental water damage.
Backup through a floor drain, sewer or septic
Comprehensive Water coverage.
Heavy rain or fast snowmelt pooling and getting in
Surface water. Comprehensive Water coverage.
River, lake or creek overflowing
Overland flood. Comprehensive Water coverage.
Broken exterior water, sewer or septic pipe
Service Pipe coverage, where included.

One coverage instead of several add-ons

Most insurers sell sewer backup and flood as separate add-ons. The Co-operators rolls them into one: Comprehensive Water, covering sewer and septic backup, overflow of lakes, rivers, creeks and streams, and surface water build-up from heavy rain, fast snowmelt and extreme weather.

The Co-operators was the first Canadian insurer to offer overland flood cover to homeowners, and launched it in Ontario in 2016. Many long-standing policies have it; many do not. Check before you assume either way.

Service pipe and loss prevention cover

Where it is part of your policy, Service Pipe coverage pays up to $15,000 to repair or replace damaged exterior water, sewer or septic service pipes, including the parts of the property that have to be dug up to reach them. Loss prevention reimbursement of up to $5,000 can cover what you spend protecting the house when a flood warning is issued.

Homes with a backwater valve on the sewer line or a backup sump pump may qualify for a discount. If you are rebuilding after a backup, it is worth fitting one.

How to open the claim with The Co-operators

Call the claims centre on 1-877-682-5246 at any hour. A claims representative or adjuster contacts you, gathers the facts, looks at the damage and gets repair estimates. The Co-operators either pays directly for repairs or offers a settlement under your policy, less your deductible.

On a water loss, The Co-operators may send a water removal contractor from its preferred vendor network. If you would rather use your own contractor, tell your representative at the start and ask how the settlement will be paid.

What we do on a Co-operators claim

We extract, map the moisture, remove only what cannot be dried, and dry the structure to a measured standard with daily readings. Everything is photographed before it is removed. That is the evidence an adjuster uses to agree the estimate.

Our experience with The Co-operators claims

Insurance claims are most of our work, and we have handled claims for The Co-operators policyholders. We know what the The Co-operators claims team asks for and how its water coverage is set up, so the evidence your adjuster needs is collected from the first hour instead of pieced together afterwards.

You deal with one team from the first call to the final repair. We answer the adjuster’s questions ourselves, and we tell you plainly what your policy is likely to cover before any work that is not an emergency.
