Economical Insurance (Definity) and water damage: what’s covered and how the claim works
This page explains how Economical Insurance handles water damage on a home policy, in plain language, with the facts taken from Economical Insurance’s own website. It is general information, not advice on your policy. Your policy documents and your claims representative are the final word on what you hold.
Which Economical Insurance coverage applies to what you’re seeing
Start with where the water came from. That decides which part of the policy it falls under.
- Burst pipe or appliance leak
- Standard sudden and accidental water damage.
- Water from a sewer, drain, sump pump or septic system
- Sewer backup endorsement.
- Heavy rain, overflowing rivers, spring run-off or melting snow
- Overland water coverage.
Economical is becoming Definity
Economical Insurance is changing its name to Definity Insurance, so your documents may carry either name. The claims line and your coverage do not change because of the rename. Definity also owns Sonnet and took over the Travelers Canada personal home and auto business.
Economical policies are sold through brokers, so your broker is a good second call after the claims line. They can chase the claim if it stalls.
Which add-on you need
Economical says plainly that sewer backup is often not in a standard home policy and has to be added as an endorsement. It covers water from a sewer, drain, sump pump or septic system. Water from outside, such as excessive rain, overflowing rivers, spring run-off or melting snow, needs overland water coverage.
What we do on an Economical or Definity claim
We stop the damage first: extraction, moisture mapping and drying to a measured standard, logged daily. Then we give the adjuster a written scope with photographs of everything that had to come out, so the rebuild is agreed before it starts.
Our experience with Economical Insurance claims
Insurance claims are most of our work, and we have handled claims for Economical Insurance policyholders. We know what the Economical Insurance claims team asks for and how its water coverage is set up, so the evidence your adjuster needs is collected from the first hour instead of pieced together afterwards.
You deal with one team from the first call to the final repair. We answer the adjuster’s questions ourselves, and we tell you plainly what your policy is likely to cover before any work that is not an emergency.
