TD Insurance and water damage: what’s covered and how the claim works

This page explains how TD Insurance handles water damage on a home policy, in plain language, with the facts taken from TD Insurance’s own website. It is general information, not advice on your policy. Your policy documents and your claims representative are the final word on what you hold.

Which TD Insurance coverage applies to what you’re seeing

Start with where the water came from. That decides which part of the policy it falls under.

Burst pipe, split water heater, failed appliance hose
Standard policy: sudden and accidental escape of water.
Water coming up through a floor drain or toilet
Sewer backup. Only with Extended Water Damage coverage.
Sump pump overflowed or failed
Sump overflow. Only with Extended Water Damage coverage.
Rain or snowmelt seeping through the foundation or basement floor
Ground or surface water. Only with Extended Water Damage coverage.
A creek, river or lake overflowed into the house
Overland water. Only with Extended Water Damage coverage.

Check whether you have Extended Water Damage coverage

Extended Water Damage is an optional add-on with its own premium, so many TD policyholders do not have it. It is the difference between a covered basement flood and one you pay for yourself. You can see it in MyInsurance, on your policy documents, or by asking the claims line.

If the water came up through a floor drain, the add-on is what matters. If a pipe burst, it usually does not, because sudden escape of water from plumbing is part of the standard policy.

How to open the claim with TD

Call 1-866-454-8910, or submit the claim online or in the app. All three work around the clock. TD assigns a dedicated claims advisor, who confirms your coverage and works through the estimate with you.

Before you call, photograph the water line on the walls, every wet room and the source if you can see it. TD’s own claims guidance says written notes and photos speed the claim up, and that you should shut off the main water supply and move undamaged belongings to a dry area when it is safe to do so.

TD’s preferred contractor, or your own

TD offers two ways to settle a home claim. You can have the repairs done by one of TD’s preferred contractors, in which case TD pays them directly and guarantees the claim-related repairs for up to three years. Or you can take a direct settlement: TD pays you, and you decide whether to repair and who does it. TD’s own wording is that the choice is yours.

If you would rather use a contractor you have chosen yourself, tell your claims advisor at the start. We will give them a written scope, moisture readings and photographs so the estimate can be agreed before the rebuild begins, and we will explain to you how payment works on your claim before any work that is not an emergency.

Do not wait for the adjuster to start drying

Every policy expects you to stop the damage getting worse. Extracting standing water and setting up drying equipment in the first hours is part of that obligation, not something that has to wait for approval. Mould can begin to establish 24 to 48 hours after materials get wet, and mould from a delayed response is commonly excluded.

What should wait is demolition that goes beyond what is needed to dry the building. We document everything before it is removed so your advisor can see exactly what was wet and why it came out.

Our experience with TD Insurance claims

Insurance claims are most of our work, and we have handled claims for TD Insurance policyholders. We know what the TD Insurance claims team asks for and how its water coverage is set up, so the evidence your adjuster needs is collected from the first hour instead of pieced together afterwards.

You deal with one team from the first call to the final repair. We answer the adjuster’s questions ourselves, and we tell you plainly what your policy is likely to cover before any work that is not an emergency.

Questions

Common questions

Does TD home insurance cover a flooded basement?

It depends on where the water came from. A burst pipe is normally covered by the standard policy. Water that came up a floor drain, overflowed from the sump, seeped through the foundation or flowed in from outside is only covered if you have TD’s optional Extended Water Damage coverage.

What is TD Extended Water Damage coverage?

An optional add-on to a TD home policy, with its own premium, that covers sewer backup and sump overflow, ground and surface water entering through below-ground walls or the basement floor, and overland water from the overflow of freshwater. Exclusions apply, so check your policy wording.

What is the TD Insurance home claims number?

1-866-454-8910, 24 hours a day. You can also submit a claim online through MyInsurance or in the TD Insurance app.

Do I have to use TD’s preferred contractor?

No. TD offers repairs through its preferred contractors or a direct settlement paid to you, and says the choice is yours. With a direct settlement you decide who does the repairs.

Is Delta24 part of TD Insurance?

No. Delta24 Restoration is an independent restoration company. We work on claims for TD Insurance policyholders, but we are not affiliated with or endorsed by TD Insurance.
