Desjardins Insurance and water damage: what’s covered and how the claim works
This page explains how Desjardins Insurance handles water damage on a home policy, in plain language, with the facts taken from Desjardins Insurance’s own website. It is general information, not advice on your policy. Your policy documents and your claims representative are the final word on what you hold.
Which Desjardins Insurance coverage applies to what you’re seeing
Start with where the water came from. That decides which part of the policy it falls under.
- Sudden burst pipe or appliance leak
- Covered as sudden and accidental water damage.
- Backup from a sewer or septic tank
- Ground water and sewer backup. Optional coverage.
- Water seeping in through the foundation or a basement window
- Ground water and sewer backup. Optional coverage.
- A river, lake or stream overflowed onto the property
- Flood. Optional coverage.
Sewer backup and ground water are one option at Desjardins
Desjardins groups sewer backup with ground water: water seeping in through the foundation, including basement windows. That is useful in a GTA storm, where a basement often takes water both ways at once. Flood from the overflow of a body of water is a separate optional coverage.
Desjardins also offers policyholders with the sewer backup option money towards protective devices after a backup, such as a backwater valve. Ask your claims advisor about it. It sits well with the City of Toronto’s own subsidy.
How to open the claim with Desjardins
Call 1-888-776-8343 at any hour, or fill out the claim form in Online Services or the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app. A claims advisor is assigned to you.
Desjardins asks you to keep damaged items until your claims advisor says otherwise. Photograph them, move what you can to a dry area, and do not throw anything out yet.
A recommended provider, or your own
Desjardins will refer you to a recommended service provider if you want one, but it does not require it. If you use your own contractor, Desjardins refunds you on receipt of the invoice.
That makes documentation matter even more, because the invoice has to match what the advisor agreed. We give you and your advisor a written scope before the rebuild, and the drying logs and photographs that support every line on it.
What we do on a Desjardins claim
Extraction, moisture mapping, removal of what cannot be dried, and structural drying to a measured standard, all logged daily. If the water came up through a drain, we treat it as contaminated black water and document the removal of affected material before it leaves the house.
Our experience with Desjardins Insurance claims
Insurance claims are most of our work, and we have handled claims for Desjardins Insurance policyholders. We know what the Desjardins Insurance claims team asks for and how its water coverage is set up, so the evidence your adjuster needs is collected from the first hour instead of pieced together afterwards.
You deal with one team from the first call to the final repair. We answer the adjuster’s questions ourselves, and we tell you plainly what your policy is likely to cover before any work that is not an emergency.
