Sonnet Insurance and water damage: what’s covered and how the claim works
This page explains how Sonnet Insurance handles water damage on a home policy, in plain language, with the facts taken from Sonnet Insurance’s own website. It is general information, not advice on your policy. Your policy documents and your claims representative are the final word on what you hold.
Which Sonnet Insurance coverage applies to what you’re seeing
Start with where the water came from. That decides which part of the policy it falls under.
- Burst pipe or appliance leak
- Standard sudden and accidental water damage.
- Water through pipes, drains, septic tanks, eavestroughs or downspouts
- Sewer backup, sold together with overland water.
- Fresh water through windows or doors at ground level
- Overland water, sold together with sewer backup.
Sold as a pair
Sonnet always pairs overland water with sewer backup. If you have one, you have the other. Sewer backup covers water that comes in through pipes, drains, septic tanks, eavestroughs or downspouts; overland water covers fresh water that comes through windows and doors at ground level from heavy rain, river flooding, spring run-off or melting snow.
Sonnet is part of Definity, which also owns Economical Insurance.
Document first, then clean
Sonnet’s own advice after a sewer backup is not to start cleaning until the damage is documented. Take photographs, and keep anything that shows the cause, such as a piece of burst pipe, a braided hose or the sump pump. Once it is documented, cleaning can start if it is safe, meaning the water is well below electrical outlets.
Sewage is Category 3 black water. Cleaning it is not a mop-and-bleach job, and porous material it touched usually has to come out under containment.
Sonnet’s vendors, or your own
Sonnet can send an emergency services vendor and set you up with a pre-screened contractor whose work it guarantees for 2 years. If you prefer a contractor you have chosen, raise it when you report the claim.
Our experience with Sonnet Insurance claims
Insurance claims are most of our work, and we have handled claims for Sonnet Insurance policyholders. We know what the Sonnet Insurance claims team asks for and how its water coverage is set up, so the evidence your adjuster needs is collected from the first hour instead of pieced together afterwards.
You deal with one team from the first call to the final repair. We answer the adjuster’s questions ourselves, and we tell you plainly what your policy is likely to cover before any work that is not an emergency.
